How to be smarter through conversation

August 2, 2020

Sharable: The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said ~ Peter Drucker.

In my Courageous Leadership Coaching and Consulting practice, one of the conversational essentials that coaching clients learn and embody is listening to connect and accept, not judge or reject.

Learning to listen with the intent to understand versus reply changes our neuroplasticity.

Consider right now a conversation that you had recently where you felt really heard.

What was different about that conversation?

When we listen with the intent to understand, we literally strive to stand under the speaker’s reality. We lean into thinking and feeling what it must be like to be that person. This opens our channels of compassion and empathy for greater connection and trust.

We move away from judgement and criticism and expand into greater possibilities, We begin to focus differently which changes our brain in that moment.

In that moment, we exercise leadership alignment both from within ourselves and then with that other person.

The conversation becomes deeply moving and meaningful for both parties. We feel heard.
